What is a Webring?
Technically, a webring is a list of websites stitched at the ends to make a looped sequence. Visitors navigate between the websites by clicking Next or Previous on a widget featured on each website.
Socially, a webring is a collective of website owners. They become a member of the webring when their website is accepted into the group.
Webrings were more common when search engines and social media weren't the default ways to interact with the web. The web was more personal and links between websites represented personal connections.
Why webring.gg?
This is my idea of an art project.
How do I register a site?
Create an account and get your unique user and verification codes.
Embed the <script> in the <head> and the widget html with your user and verification codes anywhere in the <body>.
<script src="https://static.webring.gg/www/scripts/widget.js"></script>
<div data-webringgg data-user="YOUR_USER_CODE" data-verification="YOUR_VERIFICATION_CODE"></div>
Refresh your website in the browser to activate the registration script.
How do I become a member of a ring?
If a website is listed in a ring, the website owner is a member of the ring.
To have your website be listed in a ring, you must receive an invite proposal from an existing member of the ring.
You and the members of the ring will vote on whether the proposed website should join the ring.
If the proposal passes, your website will be listed in the ring.
What are proposals?
Proposals are the way webites are invited to join rings.
Depending on the governance model of the ring, relevant members will vote on proposals whether to accept the admission of the website into the ring. The website owner will also vote whether they want to join the ring.
What is ring governance?
Rings have governance models that determine who can vote on proposals and how they're counted. Currently there are 3 models:
-
Dictatorship
Other than the website owner, only the ring creator can vote on proposals.
-
Simple Majority
All members of the ring can vote on proposals. Only a simple majority (50%+) needs to be achieved for a proposal to be accepted.
-
Consensus
All members of the ring can vote on proposals. Every voting member must agree on the proposal for it to be accepted.
Can a website be in multiple rings?
Yes.
If I have multiple sites in a ring, do I get more votes?
No.
How can I customize the style of the widget?
You can choose from a variety of pre-made style configurations. A guide to customize the look with CSS can be found here. I can help you personally if I have the time.
